...The Importance of Abruzzo

Cattle breeding, together with the spread of private property and the crisis of transhumant pastoralism it was one of the reasons that favored the spread of artificial meadows for the production of fodder.

Precisely in the first decades of the nineteenth century, some species forage spread in particulary la sulla (Hedysarum coronarium ).

In the hilly land of clay part Alfalfa (Medicago sativa), Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) and some species of clover     (Trifolium sp. pl. ) in other areas.

Artificial lawns, purposely sown with forage essences, they replace the natural grasslands and fallow lands.

The production of fodder had a considerable increase and the new agronomic practice significantly increased soil fertility since the essences used belong to the legume family, known for the ability of its species  to rich the land in nitrogen compounds.

Artificial lawns contributed to the transformation of the agricultural landscape,  in particular la sulla, it was established and spread on the clay hills since the first decade of the nineteenth century. Abruzzo played a leading role in spreading in central Italy and in the Adriatic regions of this extraordinary forage which tinges with a scarlet red. the barren and sunny calanchivi land.
